SC Brain Injury Safety Net Program Honored with 2025 Award of Excellence
“This award reflects the dedication of our entire team and our partners across the state. Together, we’re making sure every child in SC has access to the care and support they need after a concussion.” — Joyce Davis, Executive Director, BIASC
BIASC is proud to announce that its South Carolina Brain Injury Safety Net Program received the 2025 Award of Excellence at the Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA) Affiliate Conference in Charlotte, North Carolina on Oct. 7, 2025
BIASC Executive Director Joyce Davis accepted the award on behalf of the entire BIASC team, whose dedication and collaboration have made the Safety Net a statewide model for pediatric concussion management and care coordination.
Bridging Gaps in Concussion Care Across South Carolina
The South Carolina Brain Injury Safety Net Program (Safety Net) was developed to address a critical gap in services for school-age youth experiencing concussions or mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI). Recognizing the lack of consistent resources and knowledge regarding best practices for concussion management, BIASC established the program to create a coordinated, multi-disciplinary network of providers, schools, families, and healthcare professionals.
By bringing these groups together, the Safety Net ensures equitable access to high-quality concussion care, regardless of financial or geographic barriers—helping children across South Carolina recover safely and return to learning with the support they need.
Innovative and Collaborative Approach
The Safety Net’s innovation lies in its multi-disciplinary, collaborative framework, which integrates schools, medical professionals, families, and advocacy groups into a cohesive system of support.
Key components of the Safety Net include:
South Carolina REAP Manual: A customized protocol (Remove/Reduce, Educate, Adjust/Accommodate, Pace) that guides schools, families, and healthcare providers through every stage of concussion recovery. This evidence-based approach keeps all stakeholders aligned and promotes a structured path to full recovery.
Partnerships and Taskforce: Formed in 2019, the Safety Net Taskforce unites experts from diverse fields to develop and distribute up-to-date, audience-specific educational materials. These resources are designed for professionals, parents, and students alike, ensuring that concussion knowledge is accessible and actionable statewide.
Get Schooled on Concussions Partnership: In collaboration with Get Schooled on Concussions, the Safety Net provides free educational tools for teachers and schools. The program’s Teacher Acute Concussion Tool sends tailored emails to educators with practical tips and step-by-step guidance for helping students return to the classroom safely after a concussion.
Recognized for Excellence in Brain Injury Education and Advocacy
Receiving the 2025 Award of Excellence from the Brain Injury Association of America underscores BIASC’s ongoing commitment to creating a better future through brain injury prevention, research, education, and advocacy.
The recognition celebrates the hard work of BIASC’s staff, volunteers, and partners who continue to expand access to concussion education and support throughout South Carolina.
